List of Foods That Help Lower Cholesterol

Today I want to talk a bit about cholesterol and give you a list of foods that lower cholesterol. Cholesterol is very important to the health of the cells in our bodies. We discussed in a previous post what the different kinds of cholesterol are (LDL and HDL) and what the ration between them should be. If you don’t remember, go on over and refresh your memory about HDL and LDL cholesterol.

Now I want to address the topic of lowering your LDL (the “bad”) cholesterol levels. The medical establishment claims (and I’m not totally convinced that they are right, based on many sources) that it is important to keep LDL below 100 mg/dl.

Here is a list of foods that help lower cholesterol:
First of all eat lots of apples!! Yeah, we know the old saying “An apple a day keeps the doctor away”. I’ve always wondered where that came from. In any event, whoever made that one up knew what he/she was talking about. Apples can contribute to lowering your LDL and lower the risk of heart disease. See my revious post about APPLES.

Garlic is excellent for keeping those arteries unclogged. I read somewhere that you should eat the garlic within 5 minutes of mashing it because the active ingredient which is good for your heart is only effective for this long! I’m not sure if cooked garlic is beneficial to your heart and cholesterol.

Onions are an excellent food for lowering cholesterol. One half a raw onion per day, specifically. In general, onions are considered to be a natural antibiotic and should be a part of everyone’s diet.

Beans, beans the musical fruit…. - Loaded with soluble fiber, which not only lowers LDL levels but also increases HDL levels. Eat them all - Navy beans, lentils, lima beans, black eyed beans, big beans, little beans - YOU GET THE PICTURE!!

Oatmeal is another source of soluble fiber and has been found to lower LDL cholesterol. If you eat your oats with cinammon that’s even better. Cinammon has also been associated with lowering LDL levels in the blood (1/2 teaspoon a day is recommended).

Green tea has also been connected with lowering cholesterol (and weight loss). Aim for 6 cups a day (*gag* I can barely make it to 2 cups even though I drink it in nice flavors like mint).

Pecans, Walnuts, Olives, Soy Nuts, Almonds - great snacks that lower LDL

Whole grain cereals, especially those containing flax seed or psyllium (or you can add your own)

Eat More Vegetables (let me know when you’re tired of hearing me say this :-) ), especially onion, watercress, leeks, spinach, carrots, artichokes, avocado (really a fruit), broccoli, Brussels sprouts and cauliflower, pumpkin and pumpkin seeds

Eat More Fruits - Yup. Fruits are good for you, especially those high in soluble iber like citrus fruits. Also, grapes, strawberries, blackberries, blueberries

(which are very high in anti oxidants)

Cholesterol Lowering spices: fenugreek, turmeric, lemongrass

Is this list of foods that lower cholesterol long enough for today?
I hope so. If you have something to add please do!!
