Beer for a Healthy Heart?

Did you know that a beer a day may actually help keep your heart healthy?
A study done in Israel on a group of males with coronary artery disease showed that consuming 12 ounces of beer a day brought on changes in the blood chemistry. These changes are connected with reduced risk of a heart attack. What blood chemistry changes were found? Lower LDL (bad cholesterol), higher HDL (good cholesterol), increased antioxidants and decreased levels of fibrinogen, a clot-producting protein.

Who participated in the study? Forty eight men, ages 46 - 72 with coronary artery disease. The group was divided  into two groups. One group drank a can of beer daily for one month and the other group drank mineral water.  Both groups ate healthy diets with lots of fruits and vegetables.

21 out of the 24 beer drinking patients showed positive changes in the blood chemicals which are associated with a lowered risk of heart attack!!

So, if you like beer you can allow yourself to drink it in moderation, which, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services means: not more than 2 drinks per day for men and no more than one drink per day for women.  A standard drink is 12 grams of alcohol, equivalent to one 12 ounce can or bottle of beer, one 5 ounce glass of wine or 1.5 ounces of 80-proof distilled spirits.

Ah, but who drinks just one 12 ounce beer? The health benefits are lost when one drinks more. These studies usually are sponsored by the product manufacturers in an effort to boost sales.

Having a beer (or wine) is fine, but it’s silly to convince yourself it’s healthful, unless you strictly abide by the “one drink a day” rule. Cheers!

MY HUSBAND drinks one beer. Or even a half a beer.
Interestingly enough, he suffers from high blood pressure and before I told him about the benefits of beer, he found that drinking a beer when he feels lousy (bp-wise) helps him to feel better. Crazy, huh? But it makes sense when you hear that it can cause an increase in a chemical which prevents blood clotting! He feels it makes his blood flow more smoothly.
